(Sept. 5, 2017) — Students at UTSA have a stress-free tool to help them get to and from campus on time. UTSA Campus Services offers a GPS app for The ’Runner, the university’s shuttle system.
The ’Runner provides service to and from on-campus parking lots and select nearby apartment complexes, bringing students to the heart of campus. Buses are easily identifiable by UTSA branding and logos.The app allows students to track The ’Runner shuttle locations in real-time, view schedules and arrival times, and receive other up-to-date information about the UTSA service.
This is the third semester that Roadrunners have benefited from an app for The ‘Runner, which offers more than two million rides per year.
“I really like that I can stay inside until my shuttle gets close and I don’t have to wait in the heat,” said UTSA marketing major Karla Pekar. “The time countdown is really nice as well because it shows you how many minutes until the shuttle arrives. I think, overall, it’s just really convenient.”
Computer science student Stephanie Velazquez depends on the app as well.
“My favorite feature would be the bus stop feature. I like how it shows not only the next bus but the ones after it,” Velazquez said. “I also like seeing the buses travel the routes in real time. It’s accurate and reliable.”
The idea for the app originated from members of the UTSA Student Government Association including Adrian Guajardo.
“When I was a resident at Maverick Creek Villas, I always woke up early since my apartment was way in the back of the complex, and I never knew when the bus would arrive,” said Guajardo. “When it was raining or cold—or if the buses were full—we stood in the elements waiting for the next shuttle. That’s when I began to think about ideas that would benefit other students like me.”
Guajardo researched other university transit systems and worked with the Vice President for Business Affairs and Campus Services to bring the technology to UTSA.
In November 2016, the app officially launched in the Apple App Store and Google Play, available free of charge.
“What excites me the most is helping UTSA students,” said Guajardo. “The app will change our daily schedules and allow UTSA students to accomplish more.”
For those without smartphones, The ’Runner GPS information is also available online. Printed schedules remain in the shuttle stops and online for quick reference.
