Roadrunner Powerlifting Club wins national championship

(April 27, 2018) — The Roadrunner Powerlifting Club claimed the Men’s Team National Championship at the USA Powerlifting Collegiate National Championships this week in College Station, Texas. The women’s team finishing at an impressive second place this year. The competition featured 36 collegiate teams from across the nation.

“Club sports provide fantastic opportunities for students to enrich their personal well-being and enhance their experience at UTSA by participating in a sport they love, learning a new skill or activity and creating friendships,” said Andrew Chadick, assistant director of sports programs at UTSA. “Campus Recreation is extremely proud of and excited for our powerlifting club.”

In addition to these tremendous team accomplishments, four UTSA students took home individual national titles. Zena Esquivel (83+ Kg), Coy Jorden (83Kg), Davion Aldridge (59 Kg) and Ashton Rouska (93 Kg) claimed first place in their respective weight classes. Jorden, Aldridge, and Rouska were also recognized as the “best lifters” of the meet.

Melissa Reyes – 2nd Place (83 kg)

Lilly Aguilar – 3rd Place (53 kg)

Maddie Curry – 2nd Place (59 kg)

Dakota Young – 2nd Place (83 kg)

Jaelynn McBride – 2nd Place (83+ kg)

Joey Ramos – 3rd Place (74 kg)

Caleb Lamberth – 2nd Place (93 kg)

The Roadrunner Powerlifting Club is coached by Wes Zunker ’10, Richard Pena ’17 and the club president, Angel Moreno

This is the second national title for a UTSA Club Sport this season. Lightz Out, a UTSA’s men’s intramural flag football team, won the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Championship Series National Flag Football Championship in January.

UTSA Campus Recreation, in support of its vision to be a recognized leader in student development and collegiate recreation, supports students each year to represent UTSA at club sports regional and national tournaments.
