(June 25, 2018) – Fun and learning ignite this week during several new and popular camps on the UTSA Main and Downtown Campuses. Throughout the summer, UTSA offers more than 60 camps in science, engineering, architecture, sports, music, writing, language, culture and more.
Campers will explore an archeological dig, make sushi, program computers and enhance their singing skills. They’ll practice reading and experience what it’s like to play college sports.
UTSA’s summer camp agenda this week includes the following camps:
Archaeology and the Science of Skeletons
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Center for Archeological Research, Main Campus
Campers ages 9-13 will discover the field of bioarchaeology while being introduced to cultural traditions all over the world. They will learn how archaeologists use skeletal remains to uncover the past. Campers can expect archaeology themed activities, games, crafts and a hands-on look at artifacts in a lab.
iTEC Camps
Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., various locations, Main and Downtown Campuses
Campers will explore science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on activities. This week, campers in kindergarten through 2nd grade will dive into the colors of science and environmental science. Third through 5th graders will bite into food science and uncover the colors of science. Campers in 6th through 8th grades will learn about biomedical engineering and space. High school students will learn role playing games and programming.
New this year, UTSA is also offering Texas Workforce Commission Governor’s Summer Merit Program, a free iTEC program for qualified students ages 14-21. The camp gives students an understanding and appreciation of specific aspects of the science, technology and career opportunities in advanced technologies and manufacturing, particularity robotics.
Japanese Language and Culture Camp
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Main Campus
Campers will enjoy the week learning to read, write and speak the Japanese language. They also will learn about the Japanese culture and spend time cooking, creating arts and crafts activities with an East Asian theme. This camp is intended for children ages 6-12.
Choir Camp
Sunday to Wednesday, times vary, Arts Building, Main Campus
Choir leaders from prominent Texas high school music programs and UTSA’s superb conductors and faculty will provide an intensive study of the All-State Choir audition music. High school students planning to participate in the All-State process are encouraged to register.
Roadrunner Readers Tutoring Program
Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Durango Building, Downtown Campus
The tutoring sessions are designed to help children in 2nd-8th grades who are reading below grade level. Tutors identify the child’s strengths and needs and create highly engaging literacy experiences designed to support literacy growth and development.
Baseball Camp
Monday to Wednesday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Roadrunner Field, Main Campus
Campers ages 9-14 will divide into teams and play games coached by UTSA staff or baseball players. They’ll practice drills and learn situational aspects of the game.
Women’s Basketball Camp
Monday to Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Convocation Center, Main Campus
This camp is designed to teach fundamentals to a variety of different skill levels while having fun. It is open to incoming 5th through 8th graders.
Soccer Academy
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Park West Athletics Complex
Boys and girls in 1st through 8th grades will gain soccer knowledge fit for their skill level. Campers will be divided by age and ability ranging from beginner, intermediate and advanced players.
