(June 18, 2018) – Summer heats up at UTSA this week with a long list of camps for every interest. Throughout the summer, UTSA offers more than 60 camps in science, engineering, architecture, sports, music, writing, language, culture and more.
Campers will investigate crimes as they uncover the mysteries of the criminal justice system, build and design engineering projects and enhance their skills on the diamond and court. They’ll imagine new musical opportunities and take the stage in performing arts while experiencing what life is like on a college campus.
UTSA’s summer camp agenda this week includes the following camps:
iTEC Camps
Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., various locations, Main and Downtown Campuses
Campers will explore science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on activities. This week, campers in kindergarten through 2nd grade will dive into the color of science and environmental science. Third through 5th graders will build robots and discover new STEAM adventures. Campers in 6th through 8th grades will bring robots to life.
New this year, UTSA is also offering Texas Workforce Commission Governor’s Summer Merit Program, a free iTEC program for qualified students ages 14-21. The camp gives students an understanding and appreciation of specific aspects of the science, technology and career opportunities in advanced technologies and manufacturing, particularity robotics.
Engineering Summer Camp
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building, Main Campus
This exciting and interactive day or overnight camp for high school students will teach engineering design and problem solving approaches using out of the box thinking. The camp, which is full this summer, will have interactive workshops, hands-on challenges, tours, panels and competitions.
Criminal Justice Summer Camp
Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Durango Building, Downtown Campus
This unique camp gives rising junior and senior high school students the opportunity to understand how the ever-changing American criminal justice system works. During the camp, students will learn a basic understanding of crime and justice and the roles of the police, courts and corrections.
Summer Career Academy in Architecture and Interior Design
Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monterey Building, Downtown Campus
During the final week of this two-week camp, high school and college students and adults gain hands-on insight into the careers and education of architects and interior designers.
Middle School Summer Band Institute
Sunday to Saturday, Arts Building, Main Campus
Middle school musicians will focus on developing their musical and playing techniques. Campers will perform with one of UTSA’s concert bands and attend classes that include rehearsals, dival and master classes and performing soundtrack music.
High School Summer Band Institute
Sunday to Saturday, Arts Building, Main Campus
Experienced high school band members will build on their skills during this comprehensive music experience. The musicians will develop new playing techniques. Campers will also perform with one of UTSA’s concert bands and attend music classes with specific focuses.
Performing Arts Camp
Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Buena Vista Street Building Theater, Downtown Campus
Aspiring actors, directors, musicians and costume designers in 3rd through 8th grades will experience everything there is to know about performing arts. The camp culminates with a performance on the evening of the final day.
Young Writer’s Camp
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Buena Vista Street Building, Downtown Campus
Whether you want to write a novel or just improve your essay writing skills, campers going into 4th through 12th grades will grow as artisans and thinkers during this week-long camp.
Roadrunner Readers Tutoring Program
Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Durango Building, Downtown Campus
The tutoring sessions are designed to help children in 2nd-8th grades who are reading below grade level. Tutors identify the child’s strengths and needs and create highly engaging literacy experiences designed to support literacy growth and development.
Baseball Camp
Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Roadrunner Field, Main Campus
High school and junior college sluggers will improve their baseball skills through a series of drills and evaluations this week at one of two advanced camps held this week.
Men’s Basketball Camp
Monday to Thursday, times vary, Convocation Center, Main Campus
UTSA Men’s Basketball hosts two camps this week. The first one will teach elementary and middle school hoopsters the fundamentals of the game. An elite camp offers advanced players an opportunity to develop their skills during a high intensity one-day camp.
Women’s Basketball Camp
Friday and Saturday, times vary, Convocation Center, Main Campus
High school and advanced middle school players will experience what it’s like to practice with the UTSA Women’s Basketball team during this intense two-day camp with an overnight option.
Soccer Academy
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Park West Athletics Complex
Boys and girls in 1st through 8th grades will gain soccer knowledge fit for their skill level. Campers will be divided by age and ability ranging from beginner, intermediate and advanced players.
