(March 21, 2019) — The UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs (ILPA) is accepting applications for its Summer Law School Preparation Academy (SLSPA), a leading pre-law program designed to increase the number of students who successfully gain admission to and excel in quality law schools. Applications are due by April 15.
“Undergraduate students from across San Antonio and beyond who are serious about going to law school should consider applying for this competitive program,” said Ana Alvarez, assistant director of the UTSA Institute for Law and Public Affairs. “We are committed to offering an intensive, personalized experience that helps students prepare for that important next step in their academic future.”
The academy is offered in two five-week sessions with students taking two three-credit courses during each session. The course curriculum prepares students for law school and the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) by emphasizing analytical thinking, critical reading and quality writing skills. During the first five weeks, the program is supplemented by plenary sessions in which students hear from law school professors, admissions directors and deans, and panels of legal practitioners. During the second five weeks, the program includes an LSAT workshop in addition to the regular coursework.
Students who participate in the UTSA Summer Law School Preparation Academy will:
- Receive up to 12 hours of undergraduate credit, which is transferrable to most accredited universities
- Attend mock law classes by law school professors from Texas and across the country
- Learn how to build a successful law school application, write a strong personal statement, apply for scholarships and secure financial aid from law schools admissions deans and directors
- Receive concentrated LSAT preparation and intensive skills development
- Receive pre-law advising
“It is difficult to summarize just how much attending UTSA’s SLSPA helped me both during undergrad and has helped me now in law school,” shared Robert Avila, 2014 academy alum and second-year law student at Texas Tech University. “The program shaped the final years of my undergrad experience, got me opportunities I would have never had before, helped me do well on the LSAT, and importantly, the program solidified my belief that I should attend law school.”
The SLSPA Summer I session runs May 28 – July 3 and Summer II runs July 5 – Aug. 10. Admittance is on a competitive basis.
ILPA provides pre-law advising to all students considering law school, regardless of their participation in the Summer Law School Preparation Academy.
