Oct. 21, 2019 — The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Roadrunner Memorial Garden has been recognized as one of the best in the city.

The memorial garden recently was selected for 2019 Best of San Antonio Award in the memorial park category by the San Antonio Award Program.

Opened in 2018, the Roadrunner Memorial Garden is a designated area located within the UTSA Oval on Main Campus that is dedicated to remembering UTSA students, faculty, staff and alumni who have died.

The Roadrunner Memorial Garden was championed by the UTSA Student Government Association and is a testament to the character of the UTSA community, where all Roadrunners belong. The new space was made possible in part by UTSA donors who donated through the university’s crowdfunding platform. The original goal was to raise $25,000. By the end of the fundraising campaign, that total exceeded $39,000.

UTSA Facilities Planning and Development designed and rendered the Roadrunner Memorial Garden. The UTSA Facilities’ Engineering and Project Management team oversaw the garden’s construction. The space includes a semicircular paved plaza with a limestone-faced, three-tiered, semicircular retaining wall. Three flagpoles with concrete foundations stand north of the wall. LED lighting illuminates each flagpole at night and electrical infrastructure has been added for future tree lighting. The pavers and limestone are similar to the existing materials located at the Oval and surrounding areas. A bronze plaque with an engraved memorial message can be seen on the south side of the retaining wall.

The San Antonio Award Program is an annual award program that honors local businesses based on their marketing success in the community, community involvement and who has been a part of making the San Antonio area a good place to be in.
