A YEAR-END SERIES OF ARTICLES ABOUT UTSA’S BOLD FUTURE

The University of Texas at San Antonio has once again been recognized for excellence in academics and research. Times Higher Education has released its annual Young University Rankings, placing UTSA among the top six young universities in the United States and among the top 150 young universities in the world under 50 years old.
The 2019 ranking includes 351 universities from 60 different countries and measures excellence in citations, international outlook, industry income, research and teaching.
This is the seventh time that UTSA has been included in Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings.
UTSA scored particularly strong in the citations category, which measures research influence by examining the number of times a university’s published research was cited by scholars around the world. To develop the measurement, which accounted for 30% of the ranking’s overall score, Times Higher Education reviewed the citations of more than 14.1 million journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, and books and book chapters published from 2013 to 2017.
UTSA improved its score in research, which accounted for an additional 30% of the overall ranking. Core academic strengths in cybersecurity, data analytics, cloud and computational/informatics; neuro-engineering, infectious disease, bioregeneration and population studies; space systems, materials, national security and smart infrastructure; and disparities, entrepreneurship, career-engaged education and human development are boosting UTSA’s research portfolio while leading to innovations that are advancing and improving society.
Over the last decade UTSA has expanded its research initiatives and created additional research opportunities for students by recruiting faculty members who are highly sought-after in their fields. These researchers have joined UTSA from universities such as Harvard; Princeton; Rice; Arizona State; California, Berkeley; Calgary; and Victoria University of Wellington.
UTSA’s performance also improved in two other categories: international outlook, reflecting the university’s ability to attract students, faculty members and research collaborators from around the world, and industry income, which measures UTSA’s commercialization activity including innovations, inventions and industry consultancies.
Only six other U.S. universities made this Times Higher Education’s 2019 Young Universities Ranking. They include University of Alabama at Birmingham (12), UT Dallas (39), George Mason University (47), University of California, Merced (tied 60), Rush University (tie 60) and Florida International University (tie 101–150).
This is the seventh time that UTSA has been included in Times Higher Education’s Young University Rankings. The university also was included in the publication’s 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 rankings.
