MARCH 11, 2020 —UTSA’s Institute for Law and Public Affairs is now accepting applications for its 2020 Summer Law School Preparation Academy, a leading prelaw program designed to help students hone the skills needed for success in law school and on the Law School Admission Test while learning if law school is fit for them. Applications are due by April 20.
The academy is offered in two five-week sessions with students taking two three-credit courses during each session. The course curriculum prepares students for law school and the LSAT by emphasizing quality analytical and critical thinking, logic reasoning, reading and writing skills. During the first five weeks the program is supplemented by plenary sessions in which students hear from law school professors, admissions directors and deans, and panels of legal practitioners. During the second five weeks the program includes LSAT workshops in addition to the regular coursework.
Students who participate in the Summer Law School Preparation Academy at UTSA will:
- receive up to 12 hours of undergraduate credit, which is transferrable to most accredited universities;
- hone the analytical, logic, critical thinking, reading and writing skills needed for law school and the LSAT;
- attend mock law classes by law school professors from Texas and across the country;
- learn how to build a successful law school application and finance their legal education, write a strong personal statement, and learn from and network with attorneys in different legal areas;
- attend free LSAT workshops; and
- have academy participation acknowledgment in transcripts.
“I overall feel so much more prepared for law school than I thought I would because of things I learned through SLSPA,” said Emily Lee, a 2016 alumna of the program who is a second-year student at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. “I had an understanding of the legal system and how to perform legal analysis that helped me stay ahead during the first few months of the semester. Instead of stressing about building a basic foundation for understanding legal concepts and trying to determine what is important in a case, I can just focus on mastering the topics.”

The SLSPA Summer I session runs May 26 to July 1. Summer II runs July 2 to Aug. 7. Admittance is on a competitive basis.
In addition to hosting SLSPA, ILPA provides prelaw advising to all students considering law school, and hosts the annual Law School Fair, which will be held Oct. 13.
