SEPTEMBER 30, 2020 — As remote learning continues, University Technology Solutions urges you to be aware that the number and variety of computer security incidents occurring each year is on the rise. A user ID and password is no longer sufficient for protecting crucial data.
As part of a strategy to protect student information across the UT System, UTS is implementing Duo two-factor authentication for students today. This security measure will protect student financial data accessed via ASAP, including the Financial Aid and Fiscal Services tabs.
Because cyber criminals have devised sophisticated methods for stealing login credentials, two-factor authentication has become the best practice to help prevent this theft. Two-Factor authentication is a method of ensuring that a person is who they claim to be by requiring that person to provide two different assurances of their identity. At UTSA, these assurances include a passphrase and a mobile device.
With Duo, if anyone tries to access a student’s financial information (or any other two-factor protected data), they will be alerted right away and be able to prevent access.
To set up a Duo account, students should visit the UTSA Passphrase portal and select Duo Setup Authentication and have their mobile device ready. Students who don’t have a mobile phone may use a tablet, landline or specially purchased token to set up Duo. For more information, visit the Duo authentication FAQ page.
