APRIL 7, 2021 — Today is the last day for the inaugural UTSA Giving Day. All gifts made online before 7 p.m. will count toward the total, helping set new records for giving to UTSA.

UTSA Giving Day started strong on April 6 with hundreds of donors showing their pride by supporting a project via the UTSA Giving Day website. The overall goal is 1,969 donors in just 1,969 minutes from all 50 U.S. states.

“I am inspired to see the tremendous support for our students and university,” said President Taylor Eighmy. “UTSA Giving Day donors are fueling our momentum as we build the university of the future for San Antonio and for Texas.”

“I am inspired to see the tremendous support for our students and university.”

“Because of the coronavirus, we made some difficult choices last year to pull back on programs that were relied on to give alumni and friends opportunities to support the university,” said Karl Miller-Lugo, vice president for development and alumni relations. “It is so gratifying to see Roadrunners and our community responding as part of UTSA Giving Day. Every donor is helping ‘Build the Nest’ by not only replacing but building on the support generated through those past efforts.”

Many gifts are being channeled to student success initiatives across the university. There are more than 50 programs participating.

There are still multiple opportunities for donors to amplify their gifts through matching and participation challenges. Generous supporters have pledged to match gifts or have their gifts unlock based on participation within their preferred colleges or units. For example, if 75 donors contribute to the UTSA Libraries and the Institute of Texan Cultures, then a $25,000 gift will be unlocked from generous friends Scott Sawtelle and Kathleen Curry.

The final power hour is 5–7 p.m. today, and the project with the largest number of donors during that time will be awarded additional funds.

Our leaderboards are tracking real-time results for the colleges and programs participating, and there are still challenges to be decided. For instance, the programs with the greatest number of donors will earn $5,000, thanks to a generous sponsorship from April Ancira ’03; the most dollars raised receives $5,000, sponsored by Campaign Leadership Committee member Norman Jacobson; and the college with the most improvement will also receive $5,000.

The leaderboard will also be shared during a live broadcast on the UTSA Facebook page at 6:30 p.m. Tune in to hear a performance by UTSA’s steel drum band. Rowdy and President Eighmy will also be on hand to show appreciation.

“Everyone can help the programs they care about most by making a gift and also by sharing on social media,” said Miller-Lugo. “Participation is our number one goal, and until the final minute, everyone can make a difference for UTSA. Our students are counting on us all.”
