JUNE 24, 2022 — This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. § 1681), which was signed into law on June 23. The federal law prohibits discrimination based on gender in educational institutions which receive federal financial assistance—thus helping to create equal opportunities for female athletes.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary, UTSA Athletics created a series of videos in which staff and student athletes discuss how Title IX opened doors for women’s sports to grow in America, and how the law impacted them personally.

Today’s video features Michelle Cheatham, head coach for UTSA Softball and senior infielder Riley Grunberg. Cheatham was a four-year letterwinner for UTSA Softball from 1999-2022, and still appears on eight of the school’s career charts. Last season, Grunberg led the team in runs batted in and home runs and had seven multi-hit games. Cheatham and Grunberg discuss how the women of sports from yesterday and today are shaping the dreams of the female athletes of the future.
