The San Antonio Business Journal (SABJ) has honored six UTSA alumni on its annual 40 Under 40 list.

This award recognizes individuals who are accomplished leaders, under the age of 40, who show active involvement in the San Antonio community.

“UTSA is committed to providing the world-class education and research that will prepare our students to be leaders in their communities—always striving to tackle the grand challenges of society,” said UTSA Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Engagement Karl Miller Lugo. “The alumni on this year’s 40 Under 40 List personify the university’s commitment to student success.”

UTSA honorees include:

  • Sabah Bayatli ’15, Vice President of OCI Solar Power
  • Ali Feili ’08, Director of CommuniCare Health Centers
  • Joshua Gerken ’19, Senior Assistant Vice President Campus Planning at UTSA
  • Jamie Kowalski ’08, Vice President of Corporate Relations at The RK Group
  • Jonathan Tijerina ’08, Vice President at CPS Energy
  • Katie Vela ’14, Executive Director at South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless

Gerken, a member of UTSA’s Real Estate, Construction and Planning team, shared his thoughts about the award.

“It means a lot. It’s an individual honor but it’s really about honoring my team and all the work that UTSA has done,” said Gerken, who started as a student at UTSA and now serves as senior assistant vice president of Campus Planning. “I don’t look at it as something great I’ve done; I look at it as working with a bunch of great people and leaders who have afforded me the opportunity to help grow UTSA.”

The winners were honored at Morgan’s Wonderland Event Center.
