DECEMBER 15, 2023 — Editor’s note: The following message was sent today via email from Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Heather Shipley, Chief Enterprise Development Officer and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs Veronica Salazar and Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President for Institutional Strategic Planning, Compliance Risk Management and Office Operations Carlos Martinez to all faculty, staff and students:

As we approach the end of the year, we wanted to share our deep gratitude for your careful attention and responsiveness to matters regarding UTSA’s Senate Bill 17 (SB 17) Program, Activity and Initiative Review (PAIR) process.

Last month, we shared progress updates on the status of more than 300 items submitted for review. We’ve since notified all individuals who submitted an activity, program or initiative and provided evaluative results and suggested approaches to ensure all matters are compliant when the law goes into effect on January 1.

Unit-level leaders and their respective vice presidents and vice provosts were informed of the status of each reviewed item. Before the end of the year, leaders will complete a two-step attestation process affirming that identified items have been discontinued, eliminated or modified. In the new year, UTSA will conduct its own internal audit of attested activities and continue to develop educational resources for our campus community.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to keeping the PAIR team and process in place through the end of the academic year to ensure our community feels empowered and supported. We encourage you to visit our SB 17 website regularly to stay informed. Further, we will continue to engage with the SB 17 Advisory Committee, the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Student Government Association and other campus groups to ensure all voices are heard.

The impact of SB 17 continues to evolve, but our commitment to upholding the values of our university and being fully in compliance with state law remains steadfast. We remain grateful for your support as we navigate a successful path ahead.
