MARCH 26, 2024 — It’s regional bee season and the top local K-8th grade spellers are heading to the UTSA Main Campus to compete in a Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 30.
Hosted by the UTSA College of Education and Human Development (COEHD), the regional contest will begin at 10 a.m. in the Main Building Auditorium (MB 0.104), bringing many young spellers to a college campus for the first time.
About 125 schools from San Antonio and surrounding areas held school spelling bees to earn a spot in the regional competition. UTSA is one of 13 universities, community organizations and local businesses in the state to partner with Scripps to host a regional spelling bee.
“Being a part of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee is another way we can help promote education and academic excellence in our communities.”
“After the school champions complete their online qualifying test, the top 40-45 students across the region will be chosen to participate in the regional bee at UTSA,” said Belinda Flores, associate dean of professional preparation and partnerships in COEHD.
She added, “When Scripps reached out to us about being a partner, we thought this was a great opportunity because it aligns with the university’s mission. UTSA is committed to community engagement and being a part of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee is another way we can help promote education and academic excellence in our communities.”
UTSA alumni are stepping up to help support the event by serving as judges.
Donors include former alumni Rebecca and Martin Salinas, H-E-B and SugarBee® Apples, which will be providing sliced samples of its apples.
“SugarBee® Apples proudly supports the bee and its regional events in its mission to illuminate pathways to lifelong curiosity, celebrate academic achievement and enrich communities,” said Julie De Jarnatt, brand strategy manager at SugarBee. “With exceptional crispness and deliciously sweet flavor, SugarBee Apples are perfect for fueling the Bee.”
Regional competitions across the country this year will help determine which young spellers will go on to compete nationally in Washington, D.C. in May. Bee Week will take place from May 27 through May 31 at the Gaylord National Harbor Resort & Convention Center.
Kim Harp, development manager with Scripps National Spelling Bee, said partnerships with community organizations are critical.
“Without partners like UTSA, we wouldn’t have local spelling bees, which can provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn a variety of skills outside the classroom,” she said. “It’s really a win-win for our partners who are able to connect with young students.”
As the longest-standing academic competition, Scripps National Spelling Bee will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, Harp said.
