This one’s a tussle for the 210. UTSA will host the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) for the latest edition of the Hometown Showdown at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Alamodome.
Saturday’s game will be just the second time the Roadrunners and the Cardinals have squared off on the football field, with UTSA emerging victorious in 2019 by a final score of 35–7.
A lot has changed since that 2019 matchup. UTSA hired Coach Jeff Traylor to take the reins of the football program in December of that year. Since 2020, the Roadrunners have won two conference championships and are 46–22 overall, boasting the most wins among current American Conference members, and tied with the Texas Longhorns for the most wins among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in the state during that span.
UIW has enjoyed its own remarkable turnaround in recent years. After winning its very first conference title in 2018, the Cardinals added three more Southland Conference championships to their mantle in 2021, 2022 and 2024 — winning Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff games in each of those three seasons. Under head coach Clint Killough, UIW is currently the No. 8 ranked team in the FCS Coaches Poll.
The Cardinals will have to deal with a prolific Roadrunner offense led by senior running back Robert Henry Jr. After a sensational season-opening game against Texas A&M, Henry tallied 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns last week against Texas State.
Henry is now the nation’s leading rusher in FBS with 336 yards through the first two games. He also shares the FBS lead with five total touchdowns and 30 points, while ranking second in rushing touchdowns (4) and third in average yards per rush (10.18).
In addition to being a showdown between San Antonio’s two best-known college football programs, Saturday’s contest also will celebrate UTSA’s 15th season of football. Dozens of former players from the inaugural 2011 team will be on hand for the game along with the first head coach in program history, Larry Coker.
The first 1,000 fans to enter the Alamodome on Saturday will receive a jersey commemorating the 15th season of Roadrunners Football.
A special treat is in store for those attending: Pluckers Wing Bar will be handing out coupons for five free wings to fans as they exit the Alamodome if the Roadrunners earn the victory.
