Karl Miller-Lugo, senior vice president for Advancement and Alumni Engagement at The University of Texas at San Antonio, has been selected to serve on the Development Leadership Committee (DLC) for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
The DLC is a national advisory group composed of senior leaders in academic medicine philanthropy. Established in 1999, the committee provides strategic guidance to the AAMC on its annual fundraising survey and broader advancement efforts across academic health institutions.
Miller-Lugo’s selection places UT San Antonio among a distinguished group of leading academic medical centers and health systems represented on the committee. Members include chief development and advancement officers from institutions such as the University of Michigan, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
“This is a meaningful opportunity to represent UT San Antonio and be part of the conversation around advancement in academic medicine,” Miller-Lugo said. “I’m looking forward to learning from peers and contributing to the work of the committee.”
As part of his service, Miller-Lugo will also participate in the AAMC’s Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA), a professional community focused on strengthening development practices across member institutions. He will attend his first GIA conference this April and will join the DLC for its next meeting in Washington, D.C., in September.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for UT San Antonio following the integration of its academic and health enterprises, positioning the university to play an increasingly influential role in advancing research, patient care and education across South Texas and beyond.
With more than three decades of experience in higher education and advancement, Miller-Lugo has held senior leadership roles at both public institutions and in the consulting sector. Before joining UT San Antonio, he served as Vice President at Bentz Whaley Flessner, where he focused on campaign planning and management, principal gifts, advancement assessments and building comprehensive fundraising strategies.
“Karl has brought immense knowledge and profound leadership to our university, driving one of the most essential components of our institution — engaging our incredible alumni and stewarding our cherished donor base,” said UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy. “His appointment to the AAMC Development Leadership Committee is nothing short of deserving and will allow him to represent UT San Antonio in a key national organization.”
Under Miller-Lugo’s leadership, UT San Antonio completed Be Bold: A Campaign for Our Future, the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in the university’s history. The campaign raised more than $500 million from over 60,000 donors including alumni, corporations, foundations and community supporters. Miller-Lugo played a central role in guiding the strategy, building donor relationships and aligning campaign priorities with the university’s long-term goals.
