UPDATE regarding the ongoing global Canvas service disruption impacting almost 9,000 institutions nationwide

As part of the university’s response to this issue, the Canvas login link has been temporarily disabled while Tech Solutions (UTS), Academic Innovation and Canvas vendor support teams work to resolve the situation as quickly and securely as possible.

We understand that Canvas contains class notes, lectures, and other important information that you need to take your finals and complete your courses.

To help minimize disruption to students during final exams, all assignments and exams that are due on or before Friday, May 8 on the academic campus will be rescheduled for a near future date.

As shared earlier today (below), this unexpected service disruption will not negatively impact students’ final assignments or grades. We intend to communicate a revised schedule for assignments and exams as soon as possible and will share an update on Friday. Further, for those who are graduating next week, commencement ceremonies will proceed as planned.

Faculty with impacted assignments and exams today and tomorrow will receive additional guidance from their colleges and academic leadership regarding scheduling and next steps in the coming days.

For students and faculty with assignments, exams or coursework scheduled after Friday, please continue to monitor your university email closely for additional updates and instructions as we work through this situation.

We understand the inconvenience and concern this outage has caused during finals week and appreciate your continued patience and flexibility.

Mental health and well-being services are available for all students, faculty and staff. Students who need support during this time are encouraged to access university well-being resources, including Wellness 360, the Crisis Helpline, Student Assistance Services and the TimelyCare app, which provide mental health support resources for UT San Antonio students.

UT San Antonio employees have free and confidential access to the Employee Assistance Program, including a Helpline, as well as additional mental health and wellness resources.

We will continue providing updates as more information becomes available. If you have questions, please contact Academic Innovation via email [email protected] or Tech Cafe via email [email protected] or by phone at 210-458-5555.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue.

The university is aware of a global Canvas service issue currently preventing users from logging into the application. The reported issue is impacting multiple educational institutions across the nation.

Tech Solutions (UTS) and Academic Innovation support teams are actively working with Canvas vendor support toward resolution as quickly as possible, although it is possible the issue may take a longer period of time to fully resolve. We understand this is an especially challenging time of the semester with finals and end-of-term assignments underway. We are examining what alternative options will be made available to support completion of the semester and will continue to stay in communication as we learn more.

It is important for students to know that this unexpected service disruption will in no way negatively impact final assignments or grades.

What you should do

  • Do not attempt to login to, interact with or respond within the Canvas system until further notice.
  • Watch for phishing emails, texts and phone calls. We are already receiving reports of fraudulent messages claiming to be able to restore access to Canvas. Do NOT click links in unsolicited emails claiming to be from Canvas, Instructure or UT San Antonio IT.  Please contact Tech Cafe via email [email protected] or by phone at 210-458-5555 to validate any emails, links or phone calls you may receive.
  • Continue to monitor official university communications for updates regarding Canvas system status.

Again, we will continue providing regular updates as we monitor this situation closely. If you have additional questions, please contact [email protected] or you may connect with Tech Cafe via email [email protected] or by phone at 210-458-5555.
