The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) has achieved another significant milestone in the creation of a unified university, as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) affirmed the verification of the institution’s continued compliance with its accreditation standards as a merged university. This verification completes the required process for institutional-level accreditation for a merger.
The decision marks another important step in the university’s integration journey and reflects the progress made since SACSCOC officially approved the merger in June 2025. Following a site visit in October 2025, a SACSCOC review committee affirmed that UT San Antonio remained in compliance with all accreditation standards as a newly integrated institution. This week, the SACSCOC Board of Trustees’ vote confirmed the committee’s findings.
SACSCOC is the accrediting body that ensures the quality and integrity of institutions that award degrees in higher education.
“This significant milestone reflects the continued and extraordinary dedication of our faculty, staff, health care providers and students and the strength of our ambition to be a new model for public higher education across the nation,” said UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy. “The affirmation of our accreditation reinforces our commitment to opportunity and excellence in academics, research, innovation and healthcare, while positioning UT San Antonio as a premier world-class university and health care system that will create impact at scale.”
As a trusted authority, SACSCOC serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices for its member institutions across the United States and approved international sites. Its rigorous standards support continuous improvement and help safeguard the value of the degrees awarded.
Accreditation serves to assure the educational quality and improve the effectiveness of higher education, according to the commission’s stated mission. SACSCOC accreditation ensures that institutions of higher education demonstrate the resources, programs and services necessary to accomplish and sustain their mission; clearly define educational objectives that align with that mission and the degrees they offer; and effectively assess and improve their success in achieving those objectives.
Accredited institutions must demonstrate compliance with the standards for accreditation as outlined in The Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement, as well as the policies and procedures of the Commission. UT San Antonio will continue to participate in ongoing accreditation activities and is scheduled for its next comprehensive institutional review in the 2029–2030 academic year.
