UT San Antonio is teaming up with Texas State University for Huddle Against Hunger, an annual fundraising campaign that turns the energy surrounding the universities’ football matchup into meaningful support for students facing food insecurity.

This year, Roadrunners and Bobcats are pursuing one shared goal: 3,000 donors to support campus food resources before the campaign ends Saturday, Sept.12.

Gifts made to UT San Antonio will directly benefit the Roadrunner Pantry and Whataburger Resource Room. When the universities collectively reach 3,000 donors, an additional $30,000 in funding from Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union will be unlocked to expand food resources for students on both campuses.

“Every donor who joins Huddle Against Hunger helps create a stronger foundation for our students to pursue their ambitions,” said LT Robinson, senior vice provost for student affairs and dean of students at UT San Antonio. “The Roadrunner Pantry is a vital resource for students facing food insecurity, and we are grateful to everyone who cares about student success and helps ensure it is there when students need it.”

UT San Antonio and Texas State have joined forces for Huddle Against Hunger since 2024. Over the past two years, Roadrunners and Bobcats have rallied around their respective campus food pantries to raise more than $175,000.

“Huddle Against Hunger shows what is possible when two university communities come together around a shared purpose,” said Karl Miller Lugo, UT San Antonio senior vice president for advancement and alumni engagement. “Whatever team we cheer for, we can all agree that addressing student hunger is a goal worth pursuing. Every gift, regardless of size, moves us closer to our 3,000-donor goal and helps make a meaningful difference for students.”

Feeding student success

The Roadrunner Pantry opened on the academic Main Campus in 2017, followed by a Downtown Campus location in 2020. Together, the pantries provide fresh produce, pantry staples, toiletries and other necessities to Roadrunners experiencing food insecurity.

The need for these resources continues to grow. During the first 10 months of 2025, the university’s pantries served more than 24,100 shoppers, an average of approximately 800 students each week. During that period, the pantries distributed more than 89,000 pounds of free food.

“By helping students meet their essential needs, these resources allow Roadrunners to focus more fully on their education, their wellbeing and the ambitions that brought them to UT San Antonio,” Robinson said.

Every Roadrunner counts

In 2025, nearly 2,000 people contributed more than $28,600 to UT San Antonio during the nine-day Huddle Against Hunger campaign. The Roadrunners also rallied the most donors, earning an additional $15,000 for the Roadrunner Pantry from RBFCU.

This year’s shared goal builds on that momentum, emphasizing that regardless of which team wins on the field, every student deserves access to the resources they need to succeed.

“Participation matters more than the size of any individual gift,” Miller Lugo said. “Every person who gives counts toward the 3,000 donor goal and helps the Roadrunner Pantry meet the growing need across UT San Antonio.”

Roadrunners can make their gifts through Saturday, Sept.12 at HuddleHunger.com. Donors should select UT San Antonio to direct their contributions to the Roadrunner Pantry and Whataburger Resource Room.

Supporters can also help by sharing the campaign with friends, family members, classmates and fellow alumni.
