OCTOBER 9, 2024 — UTSA students are exploring the life and career of Selena Quintanilla through a unique course.

Sonya M. Alemán, an associate professor in the UTSA Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies, is teaching the course, titled “Selena: A Mexican American Identity & Experience,” for the sixth time since the fall of 2020.

The Selena course emphasizes the importance of understanding the Mexican American experience and its influence on Selena’s career. This fall semester, Alemán also invited Shelly Lares, an iconic Tejano artist, to share her experiences with students.
