Cybersecurity students who are looking to gain hands-on experience outside of the classroom don’t have to look too far.

The Cybersecurity Operations Internship Program, hosted by UT San Antonio’s University Technology Solutions in partnership with the College of AI, Cyber and Computing, is looking for interns to help protect the university’s network and data.

Since Spring 2021, the program has hosted six to 15 undergraduate interns each semester, integrating students into the daily work of the university’s Security Operations Center

“The program stemmed from the idea of being able to increase capability for the university’s Security Operations Center through supplemental personnel resources,” said Kari Robledo, director of cybersecurity operations with University Technology Solutions. “It also filled a gap for critical opportunities for students to gain practical experience in cybersecurity operations.”

  • Students, who meet the eligibility requirements, can apply through Handshake. Selected applicants will be invited to interview as part of the selection process.

Interns support real-world cybersecurity work, including triaging security alerts, conducting research and completing investigative tasks,” Robledo said. “Students also gain experience with enterprise-grade security tools, threat detection and prevention, and incident response, while developing critical thinking, problem-solving and team collaboration skills.

The program is open to UT San Antonio undergraduate students in a cybersecurity-focused major or degree program who have completed prerequisite coursework. Those selected for the internship complete 160 hours of work inside the Security Operations Center before the end of the academic semester. For the summer term, the internship runs 10 weeks.

“Interns are typically selected no later than about one week prior to the start of the academic semester, which coincides with the start of the internship,” Robledo explained.

While the internship is unpaid, Robledo said the experience helps students build skills that translate directly to the workforce.

“Students work real-world cybersecurity securing UT San Antonio information systems,” Robledo said. “This direct, hands-on experience makes them more competitive in the job market for cybersecurity operations positions.”

As the program continues to grow, Robledo said the long-term goal is to serve more students and expand the training opportunities, including more specialized areas such as digital forensics.

“Students leave this program with real experience, stronger technical skills and a better understanding of what cybersecurity operations looks like day to day,” Robledo said. “That clarity and confidence can make a big difference as they pursue internships and careers after graduation.”
