Winning a championship is hard. Defending a championship is even harder. But as college baseball’s regular season reaches its final week, UTSA is on the verge of accomplishing that difficult feat.

The Roadrunners, who were the American Conference’s regular-season champions in 2025, are in a prime position to capture the league’s regular-season title for the second consecutive year. UTSA’s stellar performance over the last two months have given the team a 16-8 record in conference play. The Roadrunners lead East Carolina (14-10), Rice (13-11) and UAB (13-11) in the American standings as each team prepares for its final three-game series of the regular season.

UTSA will host three contests against the UAB Blazers from May 14-16 at Roadrunner Field on the Main Campus. The baseball team is counting on Roadrunner Nation to pack the stands for these critical season-ending matchups. The games will start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15. The game on Saturday, May 16 will start at 11 a.m.

The Roadrunners would clinch at least a share of the conference’s regular-season championship with just one victory over UAB. UTSA would capture the American’s outright regular-season title with two victories over the Blazers, or one win and an East Carolina loss. East Carolina will be on the road at Florida Atlantic for its final three games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rice will host Tulane for its final three-game series.

Fireworks explode in the distance as UTSA Baseball secures a series victory over Wichita State on May 2, 2026.

The conference’s regular-season champion will earn the No. 1 seed in the American Baseball Championship from May 20-24 in Clearwater, Fla. The winner of that tournament (and all other conference tournaments) will earn an automatic berth in the 64-team NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament that determines the national champion. The NCAA Tournament, which includes 29 automatic qualifiers and 35 “at-large” invitees, starts with the regional round on May 29.

Coach Pat Hallmark has guided UTSA Baseball to a stirring follow-up to its sensational 2025 season that culminated in an NCAA Super Regional appearance. The Roadrunners hopped out to an electric 13-1 start to the 2026 regular season, including emphatic non-conference victories over Baylor, Ohio State and then-No. 9 Coastal Carolina at the Bruce Bolt College Classic in March. UTSA carried that success into league play, winning seven of eight three-game series against American Conference opponents.

A flurry of offense has powered the Roadrunners to another memorable campaign in 2026. After a resounding 19-4 non-conference win over Texas State on Tuesday, May 12, UTSA ranks in NCAA Division I’s top 10 in runs scored. The Roadrunners are also in the top 20 in hits and on-base percentage. The team has scored at least 10 runs in 21 different games this season.

The 2026 baseball squad is looking to become the first UTSA team to win back-to-back conference championships since UTSA Football secured the Conference USA trophy in 2021 and 2022. The odds are certainly in the Roadrunners’ favor. UTSA Baseball has notched a 20-5 record in home games this year, including a 9-3 record against conference opponents at “The Bird Bath.”
