Prior to starting her graduate studies, Paige De La O worked locally as a flute instructor. Wanting to grow as both a musician and educator, she decided to pursue a master’s degree in music at UT San Antonio to expand her teaching skills and create new music education opportunities.
“Before coming here, I had my own studio with about 40 students, and I knew I wanted to keep growing my teaching skills and become a more effective, thoughtful teacher,” De La O said. “At UT San Antonio, I’ve been able to refine those skills and continue shaping the kind of mentor I want to be.”
The music master’s program, offered through the School of Music in the university’s College of Liberal and Fine Arts, gave De La O the opportunity to grow as a performer through her participation in the wind symphony and flute ensemble. She also developed research skills as a graduate assistant with the Institute for Music Research.
UT San Antonio also provides mentorship and flexibility for students like De La O who have careers, families and other commitments outside of their studies.
“I became a mom during my first semester, and the support I received made a huge difference,” De La O said. “My professors were super understanding and made sure I had the tools I needed to succeed, both in and out of the classroom.”
De La O completed her master’s in music with an emphasis in flute performance and pedagogy in May. She plans to use what she gained at UT San Antonio to give her students an even higher level of instruction, support and inspiration.
“I want to keep creating more opportunities for young musicians and help shape the next generation through music,” De La O said.
