For more than 20 years, Alan Whittington has researched volcanic activity around the world, specializing in magma properties and lava flow. Whittington also serves as the principal investigator of the Heat and Mass Transfer & Experimental Rheology (HAMsTER) Lab in the UT San Antonio College of Sciences.
“There’s a quote that’s often attributed to Einstein, which is, ‘If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn’t be called research,’” Whittington said. “And that’s maybe slightly overstating it, but in many cases, we are doing things that probably nobody has done before with the lava. Sometimes we find out there are really good reasons that nobody tried to do that experiment before.”
