Editor’s note: The following message was sent from UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy to all faculty, staff and students.
Our hearts remain heavy following the tragic incident at the Alamodome prior to Saturday’s football game against the U.S. Naval Academy. What was intended to be a day of camaraderie, tradition and celebration has been marked by profound sadness, and I know this has been a difficult and emotional time for many across our university community.
My deepest sympathies are with the service member’s family, his fellow airmen and squadron, and all those whose lives have been touched by this heartbreaking tragedy. I am also deeply grateful to the San Antonio Fire Department emergency medical personnel, our university’s medical staff and athletic trainers, Alamodome personnel and the many individuals who responded with professionalism, compassion and extraordinary care.
We often speak of the strength of our university community and the bonds that bring us together. Those bonds are especially meaningful in moments like these. We come together to support our teams and celebrate shared traditions, but most importantly, we come together for one another. Our greatest responsibility is to extend compassion, dignity and respect to those around us, particularly when they need it most.
I recognize that this tragedy has affected individuals in different ways, including those who were present at the Alamodome, those who responded to the incident and many others who are sharing in the sadness of this moment. There is no single way to process an experience like this, and I want every member of our university community to know that support is available.
Our university teams are providing in-person care and support today and throughout the coming week for those directly affected. In addition, confidential counseling and wellness resources are available to all employees and students who may need assistance, whether now or in the days and weeks ahead. You will find those resources below, including dedicated services for employees, as well as our students.
Academic Affairs will also be sharing additional information and guidance with faculty and students to ensure that those who need support are connected with the appropriate resources.
I encourage you to take care of yourselves and one another. Check in on your colleagues, classmates and friends. Extend grace and understanding to those who may be struggling, and please do not hesitate to seek support if you need it. We are a community that cares deeply about one another, and that commitment is especially important now.
In moments like these, words can offer only so much comfort. But I hope that all those affected find strength in knowing they are surrounded by a university community that stands beside them with genuine care, compassion and heartfelt support.
