MARCH 3, 2020 — UTSA’s spring enrollment numbers are on an uptick for the fourth consecutive year, according to census report data compiled by the university’s Office of Institutional Research.
The spring 2020 report lists UTSA’s total enrollment at 30,172, which includes undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and postbaccalaureate students. This is the first time spring enrollment at UTSA has topped the 30,000 mark, which is a promising sign as the university aims to achieve its 2028 enrollment goals outlined in the strategic enrollment initiative.
“The UTSA community continues to be hard at work focusing on the many important initiatives set forth in our strategic enrollment plan,” said Lynn Barnes Jr., senior vice provost for strategic enrollment at UTSA. “Expanding our recruitment here in Texas and beyond, enhancing student support and success through our student success initiatives, and offering more academic programs are examples of efforts that are helping UTSA grow and become even more attractive to prospective students. We are incredibly proud of our Roadrunners and their success, and are eager to welcome even more students to UTSA in the very near future.”
The number of doctoral students at UTSA has risen from 798 last spring to 865 in spring 2020, representing an 8% increase. For the second year in a row more than 4,000 students are pursuing their master’s or doctoral degrees at UTSA.
This is the first time spring enrollment at UTSA has topped the 30,000 mark, which is a promising sign as the university aims to achieve its 2028 enrollment goals.
More than 4,000 students (14%) are also taking classes at the Downtown Campus, with 2,083 taking classes exclusively at the Downtown Campus and 2,015 splitting time between the Downtown and Main campuses.
Those numbers will continue to rise as UTSA expands the footprint and resources of the Downtown Campus through initiatives like the Cattleman Square Residential Tower, the future School of Data Science and other objectives set forth in the Campus Master Plan.
UTSA continues to attract a diverse group of students, with the majority identifying as Hispanic (56%), 23% identifying as white, 8% as African American and 6% as Asian. Additionally, 931 international students (3%) are attending UTSA, and more than half of them are pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees.
Bexar County continues to be where Roadrunners roost, with 15,248 students (51%) coming from Greater San Antonio. Harris and Fort Bend counties (Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land) account for 9% of the student population, followed by Travis County (Austin) and Hidalgo County (McAllen–Edinburg–Mission), which each account for 3% of the student body. More than 700 UTSA students hail from states or territories outside of Texas.
