SEPTEMBER 21, 2022 — UTSA has announced plans for its annual event highlighting the critical role of families on student success. The 2022 Parent Summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at the UTSA Downtown Campus.

The event is free and open to the public and will be most helpful for parents and families with elementary, middle school and high school students.

The summit brings community and academic leaders together to engage with parents about effective methods for supporting their children at all stages of their academic journey.

Erika Prosper, senior director of customer insights at H-E-B and First Lady of San Antonio, will be the keynote speaker. She will discuss the importance of family and community support for student success.

“The summit is now in its ninth year and is an excellent opportunity for families to engage with other parents, and learn more about academic success planning.”

“Parents can help set a desire for education that can surpass any teacher or professor’s influence,” said Prosper. “They are such an important part of the journey.”

Participants can look forward to sessions on such timely topics as:

  • Social media safety
  • College scholarships and financial aid
  • How to prepare for your next parent/teacher conference
  • The pathway from high school to college
  • Transferring from a community college to a university

“The summit is now in its ninth year and is an excellent opportunity for families to engage with other parents, learn more about academic success planning and discover resources to empower them as they partner with schools and teachers in the education of their children,” said Belinda Saldaña Harmon, senior director of the Community Outreach and Transfer Department in Strategic Enrollment.

Melissa Garcez, assistant director of community outreach, led a collaborative planning effort to ensure that parents and families come away from the event with the tools to help their children achieve educational success. Partners in this year’s summit include the Alamo Colleges District, the Military Child Education Coalition, Education Service Center Region 20 and Communities in Schools.
