Less than 24 hours after winning the title at the 2026 American Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship, the Roadrunners found out they will take on No. 1 UConn (34-0) in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The matchup was announced during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday evening. The UTSA women’s basketball team and fans from around San Antonio gathered at the Park West Field House to celebrate the team’s first conference tournament championship in 17 years and to see UTSA’s name announced as one of the 68 participants in the NCAA Tournament.

The UTSA-UConn game will be played at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 21 in Storrs, Conn., and will be broadcast on ABC. The UConn Huskies are the nation’s No. 1 team and the defending 2025 national champions.

The No. 16 seed Roadrunners (18-15) will appear in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the program’s history, and the first since 2009. UTSA received an automatic bid to the tournament after winning four games in four days as the sixth seed at the American Championship, with a 54-40 win over No. 1 seed Rice.

Previously, UTSA received automatic bids for winning the Southland Conference Tournaments in 2008 and 2009, and for the first time in program history, UTSA is competing in postseason play for the third consecutive year after playing in the WNIT in 2024 and the WBIT in 2025.

With the selection, UTSA Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Aston becomes one of just 15 coaches to take three different programs to the NCAA Tournament, having done so at Charlotte in 2009 and at Texas for six consecutive years from 2014-19.
